The 40th was founded in 1989 by several veteran reenactors who wanted
to recreate a British unit as it appeared during the war with a level
of authenticity that had not been seen in the hobby heretofore. Then the
Light Infantry Co. of the 40th was selected for recreation. As the American
Revolution progressed, the British Army experienced major transitions
in appearance and tactics. The uniforms, equipment and maneuvers used
by the armies of Europe were, in many instances, no longer adequate to
ensure success in the colonies. Ground breaking research by the 40th Foot
has revealed the adaptations made by His Majesty's forces in these areas.
Upon acceptance into the 40th, each recruit receives a packet with documentation
for the regiments uniform and equipment. This documentation is based upon
the 40th Orderly Book, paintings, and original equipment of the Revolutionary
War period.
With attention to detail and authenticity, the uniforms and equipment
have been carefully reproduced. In the field the 40th Foot demonstrates
the physically demanding, quick, responsive tactics that were developed
by the British to meet the challenges put forth by terrain and the American
Continental Army. Long forgotten, these tactics are brought to life once
again. The tactics and maneuvers used by the 40th differ greatly from
the close-order drill that is commonly associated with the British Army
and Revolutionary War. Because our membership is spread out from New England
to Virginia to Ohio we rely on morning drills at events to exercise the
men in light infantry tactics. A videotape is being prepared for the membership
that will demonstrate these maneuvers.
The result is that the 40th Regiment of Foot is one of the most authentic
and respected living history units in existence today.
