Officers & NCOs

Officers Epaulettes - Both strap and rosette style officer epaulettes are available backed with your choice of officers quality scarlet, buff, white, or navy blue wool, or can be made with a piece of wool provided by you. On the underside of the epaulette is a strap for slipping through the loop sewn on the shoulder of an officers coat. This strap is then buttoned at the neck along with the epaulette. If desired the epaulette can be made with a loop, instead of a strap, for use on coats that already have a shoulder strap. Unlike other "reproductions" available, these epaulettes are completely handsewn by Debra. Hot glue or a sewing machine is not used in making our epaulettes. Please allow at least several months for delivery.

If you wish us to use your cloth for the backing, please provide a minimum of 5 x 8” piece of cloth for each Rosette epaulette and minimum of 4 x 8” piece of cloth for each Strap epaulette ordered.

Strap Epaulette - $75.00 each
Made with silver or gold scalloped lace 1 ½" wide and matching bullion fringe with a crescent of cord and bullion for Company and Regimental grade officers. At least one surviving pair was made so the backing cloth, of the regiments facing color, extended just beyond the edge of the lace, giving a piping effect to the epaulette. This epaulette is similar to that shown in Collector's Illustrated, pg. 115 and Book of the Continental Soldier by Harold L Peterson, pg. 243.

Field Grade Strap Epaulette - $100.00 each
These epaulettes can also be made with heavy ¼" diameter gold or silver bullion fringe, as often seen on higher rank field grade uniforms. Stars can be added to the epaulette for an additional $10.00 per star. Pictured are epaulettes we made for use in the A&E network series "The American Revolution".

Sequin option - Strap style epaulettes sometimes were made with crescents of embroidered bullion and sequins (spangles). These can be added to either epaulette for an additional $50.00 Pictured is not our reproduction, but detail from an original epaulette. Debra's bullion and sequin embrodeiry is not this elaborate.

Rosette style epaulettes were worn by British and American officers throughout the Revolutionary War. The color of the backing wool generally was the facing color of the regiment. Like the strap style epaulette, the rosette was made with fine or heavy bullion fringe.

Rosette Epaulette - $75.00 each
Made with silver or gold scalloped lace and matching bullion fringe. The rosette is formed by neatly hand sewing many uniform gathers of lace. The wool fabric is visible between the rows of lace. Although not an army regulation some portraits show officers wearing epaulettes with a wool backing of the facing color. This epaulette is nearly identical to the example in Collector's Illustrated, pg. 115.

Officers Sword Knot

American $50.00
Based upon Col. Elijah Vose's, 1st Massachusetts Reg't specimen. Made with 1" wide silver wire lace with fine silver thread and bullion fringe. Overall length is 17".

British
With gold and crimson lace and gold fringe. Based on photos of several originals in private collections. H.M. 1768 Warrant stipulates, "...the sword knots of the whole to be crimson and gold in stripes." I am trying to obtain the proper lace, so until I do so British sword knots are not available.
